How to start a hood cleaning business in Colorado

We found no Colorado state license specific to hood cleaning. Front Range fire departments — Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs and others — enforce NFPA 96 during inspections, so restaurants need a cleaner who leaves proper certificates and does the whole system.

Licensing in Colorado

There's no statewide hood cleaning license we could find. Denver licenses fire protection trades through its Community Planning and Development office, and each city's fire department sets its own inspection practice — check with the ones you'll work in before your first job.

What restaurants will ask for

  • Proof of general liability insurance
  • IKECA or Phil Ackland certification
  • A dated certificate on the hood after each cleaning, and photos
  • Cleaning of the full system — hood, ductwork and roof fan
